My impressions on: Dainin Katagiri: Each Moment is the Universe (benyomásaim Dainin Katagiri: Each Moment is the Universe című könyvének olvasása során/után)

I bought this e-book at Kobobooks.com, it was 10.07 EUR. I heard about it on the Responses section of Hardcore Zen.

The book is an nice guidance and summary of the thoughts and speeches of the Japanese zen monk, Dainin Katagiri on the issue of "living in the present". I think it is digestible also for people who are not interested in any religions and can tolerate religious quotes as simple metaphors. Katagiri himself does not seem discriminating either, and uses everyday language, examples and metaphors in order to make his thoughts understandable for the broad public.

I do not want to spoil the whole book and it is hard to summarize it, so I would rather share some thoughts from it in the form of my notes:

- try to be present in your daily life, being there in the very moment is the most you can do in each moment for yourself and other.

- if you want to know yourself and society, make your body and mind calm. You can have a strong inner balance, which does not mean that you are never angry/sad/stressed, etc, but it means that no matter what happens, you can get back to your balanced state fast and there is something calm inside you which gives you power to survive, even if the surface of your everyday life might seem chaotic.

- whatever you do, do it with full devotion

- you can not regulate everyday life, but you can regulate and harmonize your attitude

- when you discover moments of wisdom touch it and rebound, and then return to the flow of every day life. Do not try to get stuck in the state of wisdom all the time, because it is the sure way to craziness.

- my favorite from the book is the metaphor about our existence in life from Dogen`s Shobogenzo ("Ocean Seal Samadhi), it says that "...when you swim on the surface of the ocean, your foot touches the bottom of the ocean.. the surface of the ocean is the human world in the stream of time, the huge world we create through our memory, imagination, ambition, hope, and plans. That surface of everyday is rooted in the absolute reality at the bottom of human life. Your foot already touches the bottom of the ocean, you are already walking there, but you don`t believe this..."

- próbálj jelen lenni a mindennapokban.
